These accounts classifications are designed to meet the security principles supplied by the Director of IT Security. If you still have questions please see the pages for each individual classification and our Account Classification FAQ.
Primary Account
This is, by far, the most common UNH Username/IT Account held by all faculty, staff, and students of UNH, GSC, USNH, and some KSC and PSU staff. Primary accounts are assigned to an individual who is actively affiliated with the University System of New Hampshire. The individual to whom the primary account is assigned is responsible for the appropriate use of that account. Appropriate use includes maintaining the security of the account password and not sharing the account or password with others.
To apply for a primary account please click on the account name in the menu to the right. Information on applying for an account can be found in the 'How to Apply' section.
Secondary Account
This is a second UNH Username/IT account that is assigned to an individual who has a business need that requires multiple accounts with varying levels of access. The individual to whom the secondary account is assigned is responsible for the appropriate use of that account. Appropriate use includes maintaining the security of the account password and not sharing the account or password with others.
Common Uses for Secondary Accounts:
- Work Study Access – Allows a status employee (owner of account) to gain access to IT resources that will be used by a Work Study or temporary employee (user of the account). The owner of this account logs into all systems for the user as the usernames and passwords are not shared with the work study/temporary employee. The user of the account is responsible for the appropriate use of the account while they are logged in. The owner of the account (individual to whom the account was assigned) maintains the password, is responsible for the appropriate use of the account overall and takes responsibility for the actions of the user while they are logged into the account. The owner of the account is required to keep audit records on the use of the account (who is using the account and when).
- Test Accounts – Access to IT resources that differ from those associated with an individual’s primary account, normally with fewer privileges. The individual to whom the test account is assigned is responsible for the appropriate use of the account.
- Administrative Accounts - Access to IT resources that differ from those associated with an individual’s primary account, normally with greater privileges. The individual to whom the administrative account is assigned is responsible for the appropriate use of the account.
- Automated E-mail Process – Allows an E-mail account to be tied to an external application, which is able to automatically send/receive E-mails. The individual to whom the E-mail account is assigned is responsible for the appropriate use and monitoring of the account.
- Account for Running Automated Job - Allows an account to be tied to a network application or server, which is able to automatically run a job. The individual to whom the account is assigned is responsible for the appropriate use and monitoring of the account.

Pool Account
This IT Account is controlled by a UNH status employee (Guardian of the account) and is assigned to a specific person (user of the account), usually an hourly or temporary student employee, with an assigned expiration date. Default expiration is set to the end of the fiscal year, unless otherwise noted, but no longer than one year. Over time, the account can rotate to several different persons but never more than one person at a time. Upon notification by the Guardian that the user of the account has left their position, IT Accounts Administrators will disable the account. As directed by the Guardian, reassignment and activation of the account will occur again when a new user of the account needs to be assigned. The user of the pool account is responsible for the appropriate use of the account. Appropriate use includes maintaining the security of the account password and not sharing the account or password with others. The Guardian of the account will supervise the use of this account, insure that it is used in an appropriate manner and work with the IT Account Administrators to maintain the records related to the user of the pool account.
Common Uses for Pool Accounts:
- Work Study Access – A pool account can be created and reassigned to different users over time for departments with positions requiring extensive access to IT resources but have a high employee turnover rate.
- Course Specific Accounts – If, for technical reasons, an additional account is required to teach a course, a pool account can be created and assigned to the appropriate instructor each semester.

Sponsored Accounts
This is a Primary IT Account belonging to a non-affiliate of the University who has Sponsored User status. Sponsored User status is required for persons wanting to obtain access to UNH computing resources, but whose affiliation with UNH, GSC, or USNH requires additional authorization to use UNH computing resources. This includes, but is not limited to, volunteers, contractors, visiting students and scholars, prior students/employees of the University, and student employees requesting access to the Administrative AD Domain or Outlook Exchange E-mail. Sponsored User status requires yearly approval by a President, Vice President, Provost, Dean, or Designated Sponsor Representative (DSR).
